Generic Proair Inhaler ( Salbutamol (Albuterol) )
Proair Inhaler (salbutamol, also known as albuterol) is a rapid‑acting bronchodilator belonging to the short‑acting beta₂‑agonist (SABA) class. It is indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and for the prevention of exercise‑induced bronchospasm. Salbutamol stimulates beta₂‑adrenergic receptors in airway smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of bronchial walls, improved airflow, and rapid symptom relief. Proair is intended for as‑needed use and is not a substitute for maintenance anti‑inflammatory therapy.
Usual adult dose: For acute bronchospasm, 1 to 2 inhalations (100 mcg to 200 mcg) as needed, every 4 to 6 hours. For prevention of exercise‑induced bronchospasm, 2 inhalations (200 mcg) taken 15 to 30 minutes before exercise. The maximum total daily dose is generally 8 inhalations (800 mcg) in 24 hours. Patients should be advised to seek medical attention if symptoms persist, worsen, or require more frequent doses. Proper inhaler technique is essential; the canister should be shaken well before each use, and priming is required before first use or after a period of non‑use.
Dosage form: Pressurized metered‑dose aerosol inhaler (HFA) delivering 100 mcg of salbutamol (as sulfate) per actuation. Each canister provides 200 actuations.
Onset of action: Bronchodilation typically begins within 5 to 15 minutes of inhalation, with peak improvement in lung function occurring at 30 to 60 minutes.
Duration of action: The bronchodilator effect persists for 3 to 6 hours, supporting as‑needed dosing at 4‑ to 6‑hour intervals.
Alcohol recommendation: There is no known direct interaction between inhaled salbutamol and alcoholic beverages. However, alcohol may trigger or worsen gastroesophageal reflux, which can exacerbate asthma symptoms in some individuals. Moderation is advisable.
Most common side effects: Tremor, nervousness, headache, tachycardia, palpitations, throat irritation, and muscle cramps. These effects are usually mild and tend to subside with continued use. High doses or frequent use can cause hypokalemia and, rarely, paradoxical bronchospasm. Patients with pre‑existing cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes should use with caution. Overuse signals inadequate control of the underlying disease; a healthcare professional should be consulted if the need for rescue inhalations increases. Proair Inhaler is not intended for maintenance therapy; all patients with persistent asthma should be on an appropriate anti‑inflammatory controller medication.
