Lovegra ( Sildenafil citrate )
Lovegra (sildenafil citrate) is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that contains the same active ingredient as Viagra. While sildenafil is approved in Canada for erectile dysfunction in men, Lovegra is a product marketed for female sexual dysfunction and is not authorized for sale by Health Canada. Its safety, efficacy, and quality for use in women have not been evaluated by Canadian health authorities. Sildenafil works by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide released during sexual stimulation, increasing cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels in genital tissues, leading to smooth muscle relaxation, vasodilation, and increased blood flow. It is effective only in the presence of sexual arousal and does not increase libido. Lovegra 100 mg is a high‑dose formulation and is often encountered through unregulated online sources.
Usual adult dose: No officially approved dose exists for female sexual dysfunction in Canada. If used off‑label, the same dosing principles as for erectile dysfunction apply under strict medical supervision: 50 mg taken as needed approximately 1 hour before sexual activity, increased to a maximum of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg based on response and tolerability. The maximum dosing frequency is once daily. Lovegra 100 mg should never be used as an initial dose without medical supervision. A high‑fat meal may delay the onset of action. The tablet must not be taken more than once in 24 hours.
Dosage form: Oral tablets: 100 mg (as sildenafil citrate). Lovegra tablets are typically pink or rose‑coloured, diamond‑shaped, and similar in appearance to sildenafil 100 mg products; however, the manufacturer and tablet content cannot be verified through Canadian regulatory channels.
Onset of action: Onset is typically within 30 to 60 minutes when taken on an empty stomach. Food, especially a high‑fat meal, can delay absorption and reduce peak effect.
Duration of action: The therapeutic effect lasts for up to 4 hours. The elimination half‑life of sildenafil is approximately 3 to 4 hours. Any erection or clitoral engorgement lasting longer than 4 hours is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.
Alcohol recommendation: Alcohol should be limited or avoided while taking sildenafil. Alcohol is a vasodilator and may increase the risk of orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, headache, and fainting. Excessive drinking can also impair sexual response and reduce the efficacy of the medication.
Most common side effects: Headache, facial flushing, dyspepsia, nasal congestion, dizziness, and visual disturbances (colour tinge, increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision). These effects are generally mild to moderate but may be more pronounced at the 100 mg dose. Sildenafil is absolutely contraindicated in patients using any form of nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate) due to the risk of life‑threatening hypotension. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe cardiovascular disease, recent stroke or myocardial infarction, severe hepatic impairment, or known hypersensitivity. Priapism is a rare but serious adverse event requiring immediate medical intervention. Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes (non‑arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy) has been reported rarely. Because Lovegra is an unapproved product obtained outside Canada's regulated pharmaceutical supply, there is an added risk of substandard manufacturing, contamination, incorrect dosing, and the presence of undisclosed or toxic substances. Only sildenafil products prescribed by a licensed Canadian healthcare professional and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy should be used.
