Contractubex
Contractubex is a topical scar treatment gel that combines three active ingredients: onion extract (10%), heparin sodium (50 IU per gram), and allantoin (1%). It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars, as well as for improving the appearance and pliability of unsightly scars resulting from surgery, burns, injuries, and other skin damage. Onion extract helps reduce inflammation and has anti‑fibroblast proliferative properties; heparin softens the collagen structure and promotes tissue hydration; and allantoin promotes wound healing, moisturizes the skin, and relieves itching. Regular application can help flatten, soften, and fade raised, red, or dark scars, making them less noticeable.
Usual adult dose: Apply a thin layer of Contractubex gel to the scarred area and gently massage it into the skin using small circular motions until the gel is absorbed. Massaging should continue for several minutes to improve penetration. Application is recommended 2 to 3 times daily, or more often if the skin is very dry. Treatment should be started as soon as the wound has closed and the sutures have been removed. For old, hardened scars, the gel may be applied thickly under an occlusive dressing at night for enhanced softening. The duration of treatment depends on the age, size, and type of scar; fresh scars generally respond within 4 to 8 weeks, while older, thicker scars may require 3 to 6 months of continuous use.
Dosage form: Topical gel, containing onion extract 10%, heparin sodium 50 IU per gram, and allantoin 1%. Available in a 15 g tube.
Onset of action: Scar softening, flattening, and fading are gradual processes. Initial improvement in scar texture and colour may be noticed after 4 to 8 weeks of consistent application. Significant results for older, more established scars typically require 3 to 6 months of daily use.
Duration of action: Applied several times daily to maintain a continuous softening and hydrating effect on the scar tissue. Continued improvement is usually seen over months of regular application, and treatment can be maintained until the desired cosmetic result is achieved.
Alcohol recommendation: There is no known interaction between topical Contractubex gel and the consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol may compromise overall skin health and wound healing, which could theoretically delay the resolution of scars. Patients with recent surgical wounds should follow their surgeon's advice regarding alcohol intake to avoid interference with the initial healing process.
Most common side effects: Local skin reactions are uncommon but may include mild itching, redness, or a temporary burning sensation upon application, especially on freshly healed skin. Allergic reactions are rare but possible; if a rash, severe itching, or swelling occurs, the product should be discontinued and a healthcare professional consulted. Contractubex should not be applied to open wounds, mucous membranes, or infected skin, and contact with the eyes must be avoided. When using an occlusive dressing, the skin should be checked regularly for signs of maceration. The product is for external use only.
