Generic Anaprox ( Naproxen )
Anaprox (naproxen sodium) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for the relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute gout, bursitis, and tendonitis, as well as for the relief of mild to moderate pain and primary dysmenorrhea. Naproxen works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, reducing the production of prostaglandins responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. Anaprox is a more rapidly absorbed salt of naproxen and is available only by prescription in Canada.
Usual adult dose: For mild to moderate pain, acute gout, bursitis, or tendonitis, the recommended starting dose is 550 mg (as naproxen sodium, equivalent to 500 mg naproxen) taken orally once, followed by 275 mg (equivalent to 250 mg naproxen) every 6 to 8 hours as needed. For rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis, the usual maintenance dose is 275 mg to 550 mg twice daily. The maximum total daily dose should not exceed 1100 mg of naproxen sodium (equivalent to 1000 mg naproxen) for chronic use, or 1375 mg of naproxen sodium (equivalent to 1250 mg naproxen) for limited periods under medical supervision. The tablets should be taken with food or milk to reduce gastrointestinal upset and should be swallowed whole with water. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, but two doses should not be taken at the same time. Treatment should be limited to the shortest duration necessary, and patients should be re-evaluated regularly.
Dosage form: Oral tablets: Anaprox 275 mg (naproxen sodium, equivalent to 250 mg naproxen) and Anaprox DS 550 mg (naproxen sodium, equivalent to 500 mg naproxen). The 550 mg strength is used for higher-dose or twice-daily regimens and is the formulation most commonly associated with the 500 mg naproxen dose.
Onset of action: The analgesic effect begins within 30 to 60 minutes after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached at 1 to 2 hours. Because Anaprox contains the sodium salt, absorption is more rapid than standard naproxen, which may provide faster initial pain relief. Anti-inflammatory benefit in chronic arthritic conditions may require 2 to 4 weeks of continuous therapy.
Duration of action: The clinical effect lasts approximately 8 to 12 hours, supporting twice-daily dosing for chronic conditions or every 6 to 8 hours for acute pain. The elimination half-life of naproxen is approximately 12 to 17 hours.
Alcohol recommendation: Alcohol consumption should be limited or avoided during treatment with Anaprox. Consuming three or more alcoholic beverages per day while taking an NSAID increases the risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation, which can be fatal. Alcohol may also increase the risk of liver injury, dizziness, and drowsiness.
Most common side effects: Heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. Taking the medication with food or milk helps reduce gastrointestinal upset. Long-term or high-dose use increases the risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, stroke, and serious gastrointestinal adverse events including bleeding and ulceration. Anaprox is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to naproxen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs, and in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft surgery. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease, renal impairment, heart failure, or uncontrolled hypertension. Patients should seek immediate medical attention for signs of gastrointestinal bleeding (black stools, vomiting blood), chest pain, or sudden weakness. Anaprox is available only by prescription in Canada and must be prescribed and monitored by a healthcare professional.
